What is an EV charger?

A big concern for electric vehicle (EV) owners is knowing when and how to charge their vehicle. This is quite understandable, given that we’re used to using petrol. 

Charging an EV requires a little more planning than filling up a vehicle with petrol. So whether you’re looking at installing an EV charger at home or at your commercial property, here’s a few things you should know about EV chargers.

What is an EV charger?

An EV charger, or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), is a device that supplies electrical power to recharge EVs. You can charge your EV at home, at work, or at public charging stations. 

Are all EV chargers the same?

The short answer is no. There are several types of EV chargers. Each type has different power outputs, charging speeds and installation requirements.

Level 1 chargers are the slowest. They use a standard household outlet to provide a slow trickle of power. These add 5.5 to 10.5 kilometres (km) of range per one of charging. They’re suitable for overnight charging at home.

Level 2 chargers are faster, requiring a  dedicated 240-volt circuit (like what your dryer uses). They add 18 to 120 km per hour of charging. These chargers are common for home and public charging and are faster than Level 1 chargers. Level 2 chargers require professional installation.

DC Fast Chargers (Level 3) have the quickest charging speed and can charge a vehicle to 80% in around 20 minutes. They add 150 to 300 km of range per hour. They’re ideal for public charging stations, especially along highways for quick recharges during long trips.

Can EV chargers be installed outside?

Yes, many EV chargers are designed to be waterproof. Outdoor installation offers convenience and flexibility. This is especially so if you don’t have a garage. 

While these chargers are built to withstand the elements, extreme weather conditions can affect their longevity. Another factor to consider is security and the potential need to prevent unauthorised use or theft.

Can any electrician install EV chargers?

Technically, yes. However, choosing an experienced electrician with specific experience in EV charger installation is crucial. This ensures:

• compliance with Australian wiring regulations, specifically the requirements for EV charging equipment
• have an EV charger installed that works well with your EV
• that the safety standards of your State are complied with

As the roads fill with more EVs, understanding the ins and outs of EV charging is becoming more important. From the types of chargers available to the specifics of installation, there’s a lot to consider. 

But with the right information and a qualified electrician, powering up your EV can be as simple as charging your smartphone.
