Do I legally need a licensed electrician to install security lights?
For anything hardwired, yes. In New South Wales it’s illegal to carry out your own fixed electrical wiring, and DIY work can void your home insurance. Plug-in sensor lights are fine to set up yourself, but anything connected to your mains supply should be installed by a licensed electrician.
How high should security lights be mounted?
As a rule of thumb, most security lights and motion sensors work best mounted around 2.4 to 3 metres (8 to 10 feet) off the ground. That height gives the sensor a wide detection zone, spreads the light across a larger area, and keeps the fitting out of easy reach. We set the exact height and angle to suit each spot.
