What are the warning signs that you need switchboard repairs?
A faulty switchboard is dangerous, so we’d never recommend poking around it yourself. If you notice any of these signs, switch off the main and call a licensed electrician:
- Your circuit breaker keeps tripping: Frequent breaker trips usually mean overloaded circuits or a failing component. Modern appliances, air conditioning and EV chargers draw far more power than older switchboards were ever designed to handle.
- There’s a burning smell or scorch marks: Burning smells and scorch marks around the board point to overheating or faulty wiring, and they are a serious fire risk that needs urgent attention.
- You can hear buzzing or see sparks: Buzzing sounds, crackling or flickering lights when you flick a switch are never normal and should be inspected straight away.
- You still have a fuse box with ceramic fuses: Old ceramic fuses offer very limited protection and none against electric shock. They can no longer be installed in NSW, and older switchboards with asbestos backing are a clear sign your board needs upgrading.
How much does switchboard installation cost?
Most switchboard installation and upgrade jobs in Penrith and the Blue Mountains fall between $200 and $2,000, depending on the size of the switchboard, the number of circuits, whether safety switches need adding, and the condition of your existing switchboard and wiring. Switchboard Installation FAQs
How long does a switchboard installation take?
Most domestic switchboard installations are finished within a single day, often in three to five hours. Larger commercial boards, or jobs that involve rewiring or extra circuits, can take longer. We’ll always give you a realistic time frame when we quote.
Will I lose power while you work on my switchboard?
Yes, your power needs to be off while we work on the board safely, but we keep the disruption as short as possible. We’ll let you know in advance roughly how long you’ll be without power so you can plan around fridges, freezers, home offices or trading hours.
Are your switchboard electricians licensed?
Every member of our team is fully licensed and insured for switchboard work in NSW, and each installation is tested and certified against the current AS/NZS standards before we hand it back.
Do I need approval from my energy provider to upgrade a switchboard?
Certain switchboard and metering works require a Level 2 authorised electrician and sign-off with your network provider. We’ll tell you upfront if your job falls into this category and manage the process for you.
Can a new switchboard support solar, an EV charger or three-phase power?
